Cameron Rudd
b. 1973 - Australia
Australian-born Cameron Rudd (1973) captures his fascination with the recreational lives of people in and around Berlin’s bathing lakes, where he resides. Drawing from a multitude of scenes tied to bathing culture, Rudd creates captivating and eye-opening paintings. The vibrant life of Berlin — its architecture and amusements — also serves as a rich source of inspiration for his colourful works.

Background
Urban Realism
Cameron Rudd (b. 1973) is a British painter working at the intersection of expressive realism and sensuous observation. Taking the city as his primary source, he composes complex, atmospheric scenes where human presence is felt – even in its absence. Educated at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London and based in Berlin since 2001, Rudd finds his subjects in the city’s contrasting environments: from vibrant nightlife and crowded streets to quieter, peripheral settings around lakes and urban fringes. His paintings combine a documentary gaze with subjective interpretation, where reality is shifted into the painting’s own logic.
Image-Making and Method
Rudd primarily works in oil on canvas but also incorporates watercolour as part of his practice. His works balance between the hyperreal and the freely interpreted, where photographic sources and video stills form the basis for painterly transformation. With dynamic brushwork and a particular focus on light, movement, and colour contrast, he creates painterly tableaus that both capture and disrupt the moment. His striking use of complementary colours and fragmented perspectives make each painting a vivid, sensorial experience.
Traces of Humanity
Though the human figure is less central, a strong human presence permeates Rudd’s work. His motifs – parking lots, bathing facilities, apartment blocks, streets, and amusement parks – all carry traces of activity, life, and consumption. Rudd stages urban space as a reflection on contemporary aesthetic and social tensions, often with an undertone of melancholy or critical insight. In contrast, his nature-infused subjects offer a form of visual relief – scenes of light, calm, and possibility, away from the weight and complexity of city life.
